Well, I've finally done it. I've taken on a new plot in the middle of June.
It's going to be mown, ploughed and rotivated in the next couple of weeks, so what, if anything can I plant this late in the game?
If you could suggest suitable varieties I would be really greatfull.
depending on the weeds if you have the time I would dig rather than rotavate. Rotavating can promote weed growth.
Congratulations, hairy one! :)
Check out the wiki (third button from the right) for tips on starting with a new plot.
Lovely question. Grow what you love to eat!
Where are you located? In Peterborough, I tend to sow slightly later in the year, and there's plenty of time this month to sow either in modules for later transplanting or direct in the ground. And all through the late summer for winter harvests :P

If you want to try a few seeds to see how they grow on your plot, start a thread in the 'Seed Swap' forum?
Sprout - this is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for - thank you ever so much ;D
Supersprout do you really sow all them seeds? I'm having troubel with the few i'm doing. Do you mainly sow direct?
Seems fairly comprehensive list to me SS.
;D
Thanks dad ;) Yes rosyred, it does look like a long list doesn't it :-[ and I cut it down so's it wouldn't look too frightening! Like mat, I have a spreadsheet of sowing/transplant/harvesting times, just to keep track of it all (you're welcome to a copy if you want to see) :P
Bear in mind I have two allotments and a new greenhouse, am trying a variety of things I enjoy, tend to sow and plant later than I did in the South, only grow a few of some (like 3 couve tronchuda, or one or two of each variety of squash), sow in succession (little and often, every month) and have expanded the variety of trial veggies with swaps from A4a chums. And there are 30 days in each month. It soon builds up! :)
The plants are all either in the ground, in pots, or in modules. Beans go in direct (after soaking overnight), squash in 2 1/4" jiffy pots, and after having trouble with direct sown 'simple' things like beet, carrot and parsnip, I've sown those in modules too. Some, like spinach and overwintering onions, will go on home made seed tapes. Plants drop in holes made with a long-handled bulb planter or hefty dibber, then get smothered in mulch, so I don't spend time preparing the soil. I experiment a lot to find out what works best here - it's my second year in Peterborough, so just getting familiar with the local conditions.
A spreadsheet to organise the sowing and planting schedule really helps me prioritise the time on the plot - wish I'd made and kept notes years ago ::)
I would love to see your spreadsheet Supersprout. We have just taken on a plot but the chap who is leaving it still has produce on it so we are swapping gradually. We are trying to curb our excitement by getting engrossed in planning for next year and had decided to start a spreadsheet to keep track of spending but it would be great to have one for planning the growing too.
lol a spreadsheet to keep track of spending would be sooo scary! :o :-[ ;)
send me your email address worldor, and I'll forward the file :)
Hi supersprout - could I also see your spreadsheet? My organisation skills are mediocre at the best of times - not been a problem this year as it is my first and I am just experimenting, but have the feeling I will struggle next year when I will want to have more structure to my growing! My email is slush.puppy@lycos.co.uk :)
Meeee TOOOOO!!!!!! rosierose@allegroassociates.net thanksxxxxx
Just received your email supersprout - thanks ever so ;D!!! I can only dream of such organisation!!! :'( But has inspired me all the same... ;)
Awww thank you sally, so glad you got some use from it :)
One of my chums (a planner by trade) enlightened me about what plans are for - the point of a plan is to have a basis for flexibility sez she. So the s/s presents a list of options and results, rather than being an imposition. If you sort the lists by month, hey presto you have your sowing list and can choose from it. It doesn't matter if I don't get around to sowing a seed e.g. in the first possible month, knowing there are two or more to go. And if I miss the sowing altogether, I just write in 'not 2006' - job done! ;D
I feel a bit cheeky asking this - but any chance that you could send a copy of your spread sheet to me. Am also new to this game, and have muddled way through this spring/summer. Would be great to see how the experienced to things.
email to send to if poss - nikkipinder@fsmail.net Many thanks
Please pm your e-mail address to supersprout. Spammers trawl web sites with programs looking for addresses and we have already had one very wierd nonse in here very recently - you don't want people like that having it.
Good tip redclanger :o
