Title: My first lettuces
Post by: busy_lizzie on June 18, 2006, 23:38:30
All my lettuces are looking brilliant! Picked these from my plot today. They are webbs wonderful, little gem and some lollo rosso.  I just dig them up by the roots and shake some of the soil off then when I get home, I put them in a bowl of water and just snip off what I need, this keeps them fresh, -which is great.  Don't know if anyone else does this, but I have just discovered  this method and it really works.    :D busy_lizzie

What a gorgeous display!  As good as any vase of flowers.

Lovely lettuce mmmmm :P :D
I'm amazed by how well the lettuce are doing this year. Ground as dry as a bone, and the plucky little things are standing plump and proud. Maybe they're related to the cactus ??? ;D

Agree with that method, Lizzie. Better than the chill tray.

Ours have been SO slow - yet to pick one - & 4 sowings have caught up with each other.  Planned so carefully, too!

That's the method I use and suggest to my old ladies. Am growing Cos Little Gem, Parris Island and Webbs Wonderful for them and have been selling them for the past 2 weeks. At 30p per lettuce we're all happy :)

No slug pellets down (although I started them off with pellets when I planted them out) and no damage.

Most of our cos this year are Tin Tin - as a change from Gem.

Lovely photos busy_lizzie :) I'm also growing webbs wonderful, had the first one last night and it was lovely. I pick mine the same, bring home and stand in water to revive them. Then I break the leaves off, wash, chop and bag and into the fridge. It's like having those pre-washed ready to eat salads in a bag. I usually mix three types of lettuce. It keeps well like that for about a week in the fridge. :)

Yours are looking brilliant too Tim, and have to agree with you SS, this is a really good year for lettuce so far for me, despite the very dry weather, they seem to have flourished.

We have some East German friends staying and they asked me to try an old GDR way to eat lettuce.  Cut the lettuce up and place in a small bowl, pour a little milk over them and a sprinkling of sugar, and then eat this as a dessert.  They used to do this in former times, my friend said and the result was? Horrible!!!  ;D  Give me a nice crisp English salad any day!  :D   busy_lizzie
