i have wee things that can only be described as above living in my water butt. does anyone have any ideas what they are?
Mosquito larvae maybe?
It sounds like the pupa, which is quite active. http://www.mosquitoes.org/LifeCycle.html .
a drop of washing up liquid will break the surface tension and dispatch them before they become flying biting annyances.
yikes, and i've put some in a fish tank and fed them!! i don't care if the weans throw a wobbly, they're getting the fairy liquid treatment in the morning. thanks for your quick responses, this sites a godsend.
Weedbusta ;D ;D ;D ;D
glad I read this thread - my water butts are full of them too. I had decided that they were dragonfly larvae :-[
Did the Fairy liquid work ?
yes it workes a treat, and theres me ready to empty it out and start scrubbing.
Oh good. Must pop a bit in my uncovered tanks. I hate watering at night cos of the mozzies.
moonbells
excellent, shall pop some in at the w/e - notice I've also got them in my new pond, how harmful do you think it would be to add to the pond (which doesn't yet have anything in it, just a few plants) ??
i don't know, but people use washing up water during hose pipe bans with no major disasters.......how much do you like your plants ;D
mc55 they say you can use grey water (lightly chemicalled washing water) on non-edible plants with great effect. so i would give it a go if i were you. you can even get diverters from your drains (not toilet obviously) to go into tanks and stuff for your flowers etc.
