Title: after the first earlies-catch cropping
Post by: jewelflower on June 17, 2006, 23:17:31
what can go into the space where we have harvested the first earlies?

In the crop rotation the brassicas would go there (i think) but we have a bed of them growing.
We don't want to waste the lovely soil there.

Any ideas??

Leeks or prepare the bed for sowing Japanese winter onions seeds in August.  As can be seen I follow potatoes in my rotation plan with onions (and beans). The onions go in a different bed to the beans as they are not compatable. My brassicas follow the beans as the nitrogen left in the soil improves the growth of the brassicas.

Try some early peas, they crop over a longer period and as there is usually more rain in the Autumn you don'thave to water them. It is normal to get a good crop four years out of five. Last year I was still picking at the beginning of November, but they must grow up netting or sticks to get the plant of the wet danp ground.

As you say, it's lovely soil after spuds, and it's a pity to waste it on brassica ;). I usually follow spuds with alliums :o

After my earlies are up, the leeks will go in. I'll sow Japanese Onions into the lovely soil left after the next lot of spuds is lifted (early August), to overwinter.

My brassica get planted into crud soil with a heavy mulch, to condition it, rather like spuds, or after the beans are up to overwinter.
