Title: Running late with the sweetcorn
Post by: MutantHobbit on June 17, 2006, 20:06:56
Due to sad circumstances, (my retired Hearing Dog died),  I neglected the allotment for a few weeks in May.  I've now recovered enough to get down the allotment weeding, but now like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, I'm rather behind.  Was wondering if it's worth direct sowing sweetcorn tomorrow, growing it from seed in the greenhouse to give it a good start, or whether it's better to keep the seed until next year?

Opinion is divided down the lottie with the old timers shaking their heads saying it's too late, and others saying to give it a go growing them in the greenhouse first, to give them chance to catch up.  Any help welcome!

If others here feel it is too late to sow then why not get a few seedlings/small plants from your local supplier and save your seeds until next year, at least you will have the satisfaction of harvesting after your set back. ;)

Sad news about about your dog. :(

Asked the same question a couple of days ago, general consensus was give it a go---which I have.Sowed about 40 seeds in the greenhouse to give them a good start then out they go!

Dave.....just want to say how sorry I am to read of the loss of your obviously much loved dog - they don't have any hugs amongst the symbols or I'd be sending one.....

Sorry, know nothing about sweetcorn but think the idea of buying young plants and getting them in pretty quick would be a good idea - save your seed for another time  :)

i put seed direct into ground a couple of weeks back and they are catching up with the ones i sowed in the greenhouse before planting out. Give it a go.

Why not do both? Plant a bed of bought corn so you're sure of getting some, plus some of your seed.

Hi Dave

I had to neglect my plot for similar reasons but have managed to just get my sweetcorn going by sowing direct.  I soaked the sweetcorn seed overnight first to help speed up germination & it was up in days!  If you buy sweetcorn plants results are sometimes disappointing - I tried that last year - lovely healthy looking plants, but even though I transplanted them very, very carefully & kept well watered, the plants grew about a foot high & all flowered at different times, so pollination & crop was very poor.

Starting some seeds off in peat pots or loo roll tubes would be a way of avoiding root disturbance.

I too am sorry to hear about your dog.
On the corn, well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You may need luck to get a good crop, but luck only helps those that are trying !
