I went away at the weekend and came back to find that my Pentland Javelins were looking decidedly yellow and wilted. Thinking that it must have been the really hot and dry weather, I gave them a big drink.
However, my other potatoes were ok and everyone else's seem ok too. Even though they haven't flowered yet, I dug around a bit and found a bumper crop of potatoes, some bigger than I would have liked.
I'm now thinking that for some reason the Pentland have completed their life cycle early and the tops are dying back naturally without flowering. Does this make sense and has anybody else seen this?

Yes, makes sense and some varieties do this, Mimi is another first early that does exactly the same.

I have some MIMI in a dustbin but they are showing no signs of dying back yet... dig up a few Javelin and see, bet they have just done the bis... if so harvest them and get something else in that ground while it is damp from the recent rain!
;D
Thanks for the info guys.
Had some tonight cut into wedges and fried with garlic and thyme. I'm just a bit annoyed that I could have been eating potatoes for a week or two now. Anyway - I'll know better next year to have a poke around and not rely on seeing flowers.
