Title: Watering chillies
Post by: greyhound on June 15, 2006, 12:30:28
My chillies are outside in 10" terracotta pots.  Is it OK to let them dry out between waterings, or better to keep them moist?

The compost in my potted peppers is on the dry side, they seem happy with this ...

...and they certainly don't like sitting in water for any length of time.  I don't let mine dry out completely between waterings though.

I've been told that chillis get hotter if they are allowed to dry out a bit, but don't know if that's true.

BUT - you're not seeking the hottest chilli, are you - just the one you're growing?
And, mostly, heat gives heat.

Surely, it's the same for most everything - moist is best?

But they do say starve cherry toms for sweetness - oh, let them do it!!

Mine did get pretty dry during the heatwave, but they are growing like crazy now, so they can't have minded too much.  Terracotta dries out much quicker than plastic or glazed pots of course.

Thanks all, sounds like they should be OK either way, as long as their feet don't get too wet!

Mine are about six inches high; did you give them heat during the cold weather?

The Cherry Bomb, which were sown first (last week of March), are 12-15" high.  I brought them indoors for a week during the coldest patch in mid-May, but otherwise they've been outside.  They are rapidly branching out now and flowering.  But they're in a sheltered, south-facing spot.

I've got some jalapeno and cayenne which were sown a little later, and they're about 6" now.  They've been out since hardening off, except for spending the colder nights in the mini-greenhouse (unzipped!)

WOW - healthy plants there. Any flowers yet?

My 4 Apache are bout 10" & always kept in the 'house on the dry side. All starting to flower now. Haven't used up last year's crop yet, 2 sandwich bagsful still in the freezer despite putting them in nearly everything (yep! that includes scrambled eggs at breakfast :)) THANK YOU STEPHAN for the original seed you sent those years ago :-*

hello everyone,

I took seeds from some chillies in March and dried them out for a week.

I started them off at home in plastic greenhouse and on sunny windowsill.

They are now about 6" tall and I have planted 2 plants outdoors at the lottie.

They have little flower buds on them.  They have been outdoors for about a week now

and they seem to like it..
??? ??? ???
But... will they survive - because after reading all your posts - i'm guessing they like to be kept in a greenhouse... oops ..

p.s. dont ask what type of chillies - as I'm not sure - long red ones ..

I've only ever grown Apache, and figured that they like heat as there are some formidable chilli growers in the southern states of the USA & Mexico - therefore most have been in the 'house in pots. I put 2 out in the garden last year & tho they did fruit, they weren't as prolific as the 'house ones & the first frost did for them, so the growing and fruiting life in the 'house extended significantly over the outdoor ones.

Hi Amp

well you notice the flowers of which there are 88 (i counted them ) on one plant now and approx 25 of those is at some stage of fuit growth icluding about 10 that are fully formed although i dont know how big the actually grow
the other 2 plants have about the same on them and probably a little behind this one
so to answer your question :- where the flowers are !

I've just never seen a pepper each that height without having some fairlt mature fruit.

Amazing plants, mine never look like that.
