Title: Carrots with purple tops
Post by: Rain on June 13, 2006, 00:19:54
Does anyone know what this means? The tops are a deep red/purple. The tops were not far beneath the surface, I thought it meant they'd be green. When I cut the tops off the inside core is green even half an inch or so down past the purple. I ate it anyway, starting from the tip. It did taste a bit funny towards the top. Should I not have eaten it?!  ???

I think it is the effect of ligth, I get it a bit on some varieties but dont think it is anything to worry about.

Yes, this has happened to mine too so I have just covered them over with more soil until I'm ready to pull them out.   ;)

Better than getting a green shoulder, but the same reaction to light, depends on how much carotenes the variety has, some are purple all the way down and through! If it offends you earthing up should cause it to fade!

If they have been attacked by fly try to prep them., some will have enough good bits to get a cooking others will be completely riddled!

Nothing much to worry about-it`s when the foliage goes purple you start to think about fly
