Title: Clematis montana
Post by: Palustris on June 12, 2006, 17:55:47
The label said 9 feet! The summer house is 8 feet and heaven knows how tall the Hawthorn is. The scent though is wonderful!

Why would I want to prune it, and no it is not out of control. It was planted to smother the Summerhouse with scented flowers from June onwards and as a bonus it has climbed the tree behind it. If I had planted it in the WRONG place then maybe I would have agreed it is out of control, but that is exactly the right place for it!

It looks lovely - very wild and romantic   ;D.

I have one over my front door that hasn't flowered as well for the past couple of years - it has a big gap in the middle.  I'm wondering if to cut it right back to the main stem this year - I know you are supposed to prune Montana as soon as they have flowered but we have birds nesting in it so it will have to wait anyway.   Normally I just go over it with the shears to stop it attacking visitors!

Looks fantastic Eric and yes it is in the perfect place, you must look so forward to its great show every year.

Ive got to admit ive been as succesful myself, i planted a montana to grow over the front of the house about 12 years ago, it grows like wildfire, flowers madly and the perfume is magnificent, the only prob i have, with it being where it is , is that it gets very woody and also very overgrown.

So now i have a system.

Every three or four years i cut it back to nothing, i just leave the stem .
Ive done it so many times now, that i dont worry, if i had time, i would have posted a pic of it in full bloom a few weeks back...and now its gone  :o

But no fear, it will be back in all its glory next year.

My mission inbetween is to get the cuttings ive sorted, to grow over my shed roof.
