Title: Manure & potatos
Post by: Trevor Holloway on June 12, 2006, 13:44:23
OK its my first year.

I dug over the plot, added fresh manure and started planting six - eight weeks later.
The potatos have now all grown well, harvested the first earlies on Saturday - yes the skins are slightly damaged but they cooked and tased good.
I still have the rest of the earlies (Formost), second earlies (Kestrel) and the main crop (Maris Piper) left.
The question is - what damage have I done using the fresh rather than well rotted manure, is it taste, how long they can be stored or something else ?

I now know for next year !

The only real problem if it is too rich is the plant produces leaves to the exclusion of all else: tubers. Some varieties will get scabby skins, but i've eaten pots that have come up through a five foot deep delivery of manure before now!
;D

Yup, a fair few leaves and flowers allround.

Tubers are forming, but the skins are definitely not "right".

Trevor,
If you mean the skins 'rub-off' easily, then that's want you want for earlies.
Very easy to clean, higher sugar levels, therefore less slug damage.
Enjoy.

The only down side I noticed when eating was that we shared out the seed potato too !

You really do not want to do that again.

Nope, the whole family tried it, as we shared out the ten potatos !
