Title: What is eating my Hosta?
Post by: Emm P on June 10, 2006, 13:13:52
I have egg shells on the compost, and have put Vaseline under the rim of the pot.
Last year, there was no problem.
This is what is happening now.
Does anyone know what is doing this?
I haven't seen anything on the leaves, or the compost.

Unless it is physical damage caused by the leaves rubbing on the pot rim I'd say you have the traditional abseiling slugs... go have a look with a torch!
;D

You don't state which part of the UK you live in. but towards the end of May here we had some bad hailstorms.  I can remember a few years ago having a hailstorm where the hailstones were as big as marbles, and our hostas were literally shredded.

Just a thought!

Oops, sorry. I usually have it in my signature - but have changed it.
North Yorkshire.

I doubt it would be hailstones, as my other three Hostas, have not been touched.
Guess I shall have to get the torch out tonight - or see if there are any tiny parachutes around.
