Title: Hi everyone, just thought i would introduce myself
Post by: Chris Graham on June 08, 2006, 08:42:53
 ;)

I'm from Stirling Scotland, and have just moved house to one with a bigger back garden.

I have created a veg plot for the first time and i'm quite excited about growing some veg.

So far quite a lot is going on, turnip and lettus are growing great.

I'm also very active in astronomy and find working on the veg plot in the summer is a great extra hobbie as i dont get much astronomy done since the nights as so short.

I do have a couple of questions tho.

- when is it safe to remove the netting from my plot (see pic) ?
- should you keep adding slug pellets if most have been washed away?
- is there a general rule for sowing seeds in Scotland as we have odd weather?

I'll probably think of others

Cheers

Welcome Chris.  What is the net covering.  Are you trying to keep off birds.

Welcome Chris.  What is the net covering.  Are you trying to keep off birds.

The nets covering everything, leeks, lettus, brochilli (spelling?), turnip, corcettes (spelling again!?).

They are getting bigger but not sure when i should remove it, or maybe i never need too.

Thanks for the welcome

Hi Chris

I'm in Glasgow and no, there are no hard and fast rules about planting in Scotland.  Just get whatever you can in whenever you can, although there's not much point in sowing anything outside before the end of March, as I learnt to my cost.  The stuff that did come up is only now at the same stage as seeds planted a month later.

Keep the netting on your brassicas (broccoli, turnips, atc) until they're big and strong enough to withstand a pigeon attack.  Your lettuce should be OK to be set free, and there's not much point netting courgettes - you'll not be able to see the slugs!

Good luck!

Hi ChrisG,
I'm up in Perth, not too far from you.
I don't have any further words of wisdom than those Greenstar has already provided, just wanted to say welcome!!

Yes agree with Greenstar.  Keep the netting on your brassicas (broccoli, turnips, atc) If it is fine enough should keep the White Butterflys off aswell.

Hi and welcome from me. And take that net off now,and then dispose of it-they are bird killers-some folk know I have a `thing ` about them.

Fleece is just as good and much more friendly. Right mini rant over-enjoy gardening and have fun here :)

Thanks everyone.

I do have another quick question.

I have a lot of brochilli and turnip growing but they seem to have falling over when i water them.

Do they require staking or is this normal?

btw also got 5 rows of radishes growing! its looking great.

Welcome Chris - not growing turnips myself, so don't know that one I'm afraid.  I grew Romanescos last year  (brocolli - ish) and had to stake those.
