Title: Bush tomatoes
Post by: Rosyred on June 07, 2006, 06:26:53
Got given three plants and would like to know if I leave the side shoots on as they are a bush? I usually grow moneymaker where you take them off.

my packed for Totem F1 says no need to side shoot but staking may be required when the bush is full of fruit.

You can side shoot any tomato and increase it's stem length a bit, but bush toms shouldn't be messed with as unlike indeterminate toms they will stop naturally at a short length/height! If you do you just get small weedy plants with very few toms!

That's probably what I had last year. I came down with a horrible chest infection just after planting them, and ended up letting them sprawl and create a tomato jungle. I still got lots of toms, at least till the blight struck.
