i was given some kohl rabi, theyr'e about 6 inches high, and look quite healthy, (until i do something wrong to them) do i plant them out as brassicas? any advice would be really welcome as i don't have a clue, and the search buttons not been available for a while.
hmm, personally i have never transplanted kohl rabi.
in any case, get them into the ground ASAP and dont plant them too deep. they should really be more or less level with the soil. if that makes sense
PS: at 6 inches they are almost at their final size, minus the bulking out at the base.
seems quite late to transplant?? give it a go
I have always raised Kohl rabi in modules and then transplanted into the garden when about 3-4" high. Never had a problem and the swollen stem bases have always formed. I usually plant them about 6" apart. The 'bulbs' do not touch and are ready to harvest when about golf to tennis ball size. The leaves usually spread for about 12" so your plants still have a way to go.
Transplant them and see what happens. They can be susceptible to all the common cabbage problems.
I grow mine in modules as I just cannot get in situ sown brassicas to germinate....or else the slugs get there the second they germinate. Mine are still quite small, and I will be sowing some more next week for winter harvesting. As mentioned, they are bothered by everything a cabbage is bothered by, but they are so great and yummy and well worth the effort!
I have Purple Vienna kohl rabi started in modules on 27 Feb. which have been in the garden for weeks already. They are about 12" high, look very healthy and are starting to bulk out above ground. There is also a white veined one among them - all out of the same seed packet. It's my first attempt so am looking forward to the first harvest.
