Corny title, I know. ;D 8)
Is this something you could/would grow in an allotment? I saw a website about how you can grow your own shiitake on an innoculated oak log. Has anybody tried this?
got the fungi
got the log followed the instructions TO THE LETTER
still got the log impregnated with fungi...
very pretty log tho....
nice it is.....
shame theres not a sign of b******g mushrooms on it.......
*sigh*
i had high hopes too-i have had great success with mushroom kits......
o well...back to the drawing board.which, luckily,i keep at the veg shop!
maybe it takes a special type of gardener to get results...
kitty just doesnt cut the mustard!
I too have the dowels covered in spores, drilled and hammered into a log.
Had a look the other day, log is covered in white fibres. Just need to find a suitable spot for them.
I tried to grow mushrooms in manure and it didn't work either.
How long is it before they ares upposed to bear fruit?
I obtained a 'kit' from Bakker. No log but a block of substrate impregnated with fungus mycelium. Apparently the 'kit' would produce five Shiitake harvests. Followed the instructions and succeded in getting about six Shiitake from one point on the block. OK to eat. Proceeded to next step and a few fruiting bodies of a completely different fungus were produced. Then the whole lot collapsed and rotted leaving me four harvests short.
Not exactly a success story and I will not repeat the experiment.
I bought 10 bags of "spent" organic mushroom compost from my local grower for 50p a bag. I spread it on a part of my Lottie as mulch and I've been harvesting huge superb chestnut Mushrooms for the last month. Don't waste your time or money on kits when you can get it as a bonus for your mulch......Dinger ;D
I just ordered some "logs" from Raggedy farm - will let you know how they develop.
