Post by: chrispea27 on May 31, 2006, 07:09:31
Has anybody had problems with the leaves of sweet peas going yellow and looking sickly?
I sthis just the poor weather?I did harden them off and were planted in good soil.

Yes, mine are the same. They are all Sutton's varieties so should be doing well. I have been growing sweet peas for many years and have never had problems previously. I have put it down to the weather since I have no idea what else could be causing it. ???
I am trying to decide wether to persist in the hope that better weather will pick them up or replace them, perhaps with climbing beans. I hope yours pick up when (if) the weather does.

Ours have been sulking for weeks and are just going for it, some of the sweet pea experts on the site have their first flowers, stick with them they are well worth the wait ;D

I would guess the ones that are yellowing are the ones that were on the plant prior to planting out!

This is quite normal, at least it is with me I put it down to a physilogical problem caused by the different environment they have found themselves in.

Mines are yellow at the bottom and the new growth at the top is a nice healthy green, plus I have a few in bud.

So as I see it there is no problem!

I came in looking for a sweet pea thread to ask exactly the same question...seems I'm not alone with my problem :o....mine are now more than half-way up their 5ft. framework and until the last day or two - were really healthy looking, lovely and green but have suddenly started going horribly yellow & sad looking from the bottoms upwards, but quite a long way up!!....the tops are still green tho and lovely and thick & bushey.....

Do these plants need feeding on a regular basis - something like miracle grow maybe?....haven't yet started to 'feed' anything as I'm only just doing my baskets and pots this weekend...been waiting for better weather and fab winter pansies to finish.

H.P.

Mine aren't yellowing but they haven't put on much growth since I planted them out a few weeks ago. I'm sure this time last year I was picking flowers already.
