Title: Spacing for sprout plants?
Post by: Hyacinth on May 30, 2006, 22:48:17
I've got 6 plants which need to be put out (if it ever stops raining :(), but space is tight.....minimum spacing for these, any ideas? It's the first time I've grown them..

Thanks.

My book said 1 metre.  I said  :o so I asked a neighbour and he said half that.  Smaller sprouts but I don't want cannon balls so about 50cms.

I am with RC on this one.  I tend to plant them quite close as I prefer smaller sprouts and space is always a premium!  I reakon mine are about 50 to 60 cm's apart this year.  I also stagger my rows something like this....

-   -   -   -   -   -
  -   -   -   -   -   -   -
-   -   -   -   -   -

Hope that makes sense.  I think you are able to squeeeeeeze more in that way.

I stagger mine too - compresses the row spacing slightly.

Agree with RC and EJ, but I have planted as close as 30cm (12"), gave then a couple of nitrogen feeds during the growing season and got normal size sprouts.

My sprouts are still little seedlings and they have only just sprouted their first true leaves, am I running late or will they still have enough time to grow? I've never grown sprouts before as no one in the house except me likes them. :)

You normally don't harvest sprouts until October onwards, so plenty of time to catch up. Go for it

I planted mine 18" apart.  Wish I had thought to stagger them though - good idea!  :-[  busy_lizzie

i have a small plot and grew some last season - but i wont bother again. i didnt have much success with them, being quite close as they are made it difficult to control the whitefly infestations, too

i am going to buy sprouts at the market instead :)

definate go-ers in a tight space are broccoli (summer) and purple sprouting brocc (winter) though!

Am very glad to read this thread, as I planted mine out last weekend and 3' looked miles too far apart so I've put them in at 2' spacings. Looking around the site, all the 'old boys' seem to have done the same... we can't all be wrong!

Cheers,
Rob ;)
