Title: Getting there
Post by: Mrs Ava on March 16, 2004, 13:06:36
Got back to the plot again this morning, that's 2 mornings on the trot, fabulous!  ot my first row of Pentland Javelin spuds in, under protection, plus made myself a rather nifty cloche using the corrogated plassy I inherited with the plot, so got a second row of peas in.  Have the other plassy on the ground warming the soil ready for the arrival of my fleece so I can get my carrots in.  That 'main' plot is really coming on and looking great!  My second plot is getting there slowely.  I have now cleared about a third, but it is back breaking.  I am now at a chunk which is just thick thick couch and it is so hard to dig as it is so knotted together.  Also, I have found a vein of bright orange clay which is so wet it's amazing. Completely different to the rest of my plot.  This bed is going to be heaped with yummy manure and planted up with pumpkins and squashes of alsorts, so the freshness of the manure isn't an issue and come winter when it all gets dug in the plot will be ready to take my spuds next year.  ;D.  The fox hasn't been back, which I am kinda relieved about, but we do have mice in our compost heap - ava saw one at the weekend and I have seen all their newly dug little tunnels.  It looks as though a Jenny Wren is nesting in our neighbours compost heap, so I must tell him if I ever see him, and my friendly robin makes quick work of the slug eggs and grubs I am turning up on the new plot.  Back again on Friday hopefully with Ava to get on with the shed.

Blimey!!-some days I feel soooooo far behind, have yet to sow my leeks, and peas and stuff will have to wait at least another three weeks(the round seeded ones went in last autumn).

I did manage to plant out the shallots this morning though-and I pricked goodness knows how many more tomatoes.

Never mind the first `posh` boot sale of the season is on Easter Monday and the `Smiling Cat` will be there doing Missionary work to get folk to grow interesting varieties. ???

wow - jealous emoticon needed. I'm having one of those days at work. would much rather be out digging. Oh well - wednesday tomorrow so I will follow suit by planting a couple of my potatoes (I only have 12!) I reckon one of the Anya's is just about ready...

Corrugated plastic is marvellous stuff isn't it - I inherited loads (along with stacks of carpet) when we moved in to house - homemade cloches for everyone!

I had a great day too EJ, lottie related but couldn't get there:-( been one of those rush all over the place days, but did manage to get to the pub( ;D!) for lunch, where I found a fellow allotmenteer propping up the bar! He has taken on a 2nd plot, and said I was welcome to use a 1/4 of it, which he has already dug!! Whopee!!  Can get the rest of me tatties in! See going to the pub midweek at lunchtime is not always a bad thing :D  DP

Having now been outside (something I rarely do when at work - there's nowhere to go!) I'm even more jealous of both EJ and DP - it's gorgeous out there. I ended up having to take my coat off as I was, wait for it, drum roll.... too hot  :o  8)

I hope it lasts until tomorrow so I can have a lovely, warm sunny day messing about with the horses before returning home to potter about the garden. pleasebesunnytomorrowpleasebesunnytomorrowpleasebesunnytomorrow.

KK - For some reason known only to my brain, I read that as 13,000 miles away. That's a blooming long way to go for a spot of digging, thought I!
