Title: After Harvesting Crops....
Post by: Crusher on May 28, 2006, 18:57:58
Hello all, not been on for a while, been busy on "lottie". It thas come on leaps and bounds since Nov 05 when we got it, following lots of hard work from my mum and myself.

So to my questions....

Radishes...grown lots and lots from seed....can you continue the cyle of growing them using your own crop, i.e. when they go to seed can I then use this to plant on....

Potatoes...similar to radish question...once harvested, can I use a selection to grow from next time round...?

Sorry if they seem simple questions, but still rather new and it does say I shouldn't be afraid to ask...

Thanks...

Mark...

Radishes are likely to have cross-pollinated with any other Brassica in the immediate area and so the offspring are likely to be pretty variable.

Potatoes grown in areas where Aphids are common are sure to get riddled with virus after a couple of years, reducing yield and quality.

I wouldn't bother saving seed/tubers from either personally but there are no rules in veg growing, do whatever you feel

There's no harm is saving some first early potatoes to plant again with protection for a christmas crop. But I wouldn't save seed potato year after year, like Merry Tiller says you'll run the risk of disease.

Saving a bit or radish seed to sow wouldn't do any harm. I once had self-seeded turnips and they were true to type.

Pod radish like rats tails can be saved as they tend to set later than most overwintered brassicas have flowered.

If you save your own seed potato they will degenerate, I got some Lord Roseberry and Aura as micro plants from HDRA and they lasted about 7 years although the yield did decline....
