I know we're not early - look where we live! And I know that that's 2 plants. But if we don't start now, the last ones will be bakers!
They have just come into flower & the 13 week guide seems to be about right. They are Colleen.
wow!!! spuds already. Will have to count back the weeks till we planted our earlies... cannot believe we could be harvesting spuds already - how exciting!! :)
Yes, I had my first two plants of Swift last weekend; they were fantastic and normal shop "earlies" size. My very first pwn grown potates - fantatic. I'll dig some more today :D

Lovely Tim :D that's a good amount from just 2 plants :) My earlies have been in 7 weeks so I have a while to wait still.
Well done Tim. ;D My earlies have only been in for about 4 weeks, but I do have some in pots which I started off in the greenhouse. I rooted around yesterday in the pots but couldn't find any. :( Is flowering an indication that there will be some there? Mine haven't flowered yet.
I haven't looked at the ones in the tub - so much for earliness!!
Flowering? Worth a try when they do!
Thanks Tim, I'll wait until they flower then.
The three i grew in a tub are just in flower so i'll tip them out in the week. Not been upto the allotment to check the others.
Just cooking my first lot of Pentland Javelin, 9 1/2 weeks after planting (south coast). Didn't dug up whole plant, rooted about with my hands and covered up the tiny ones for later
My Pentland Javelin are ready as well (after 10 weeks) ;D
I didn't wait for the flowers, but I do have some buds forming. Was going to wait, but had visitors for lunch.
I am still finishing my last Desirees from last year ;D ;D, but yesterday I dug up 1 Pentland plant, verrry nice.
We had some Swifts the other day and I too stuck the plants back in the ground to encourage the titchy ones to keep growing (waste not want not ;D. The ground is so wet that the pots split open as soon as the knife was stuck in them when preparing them.
They look good enough to eat, Tim ;D Did you have them home grown salad, with lashings of butter.
I think it will be a while before mine are ready.
Home grown, ani? Of course! Honey/lime chicken wings with pea-sprout & spicy leaf salad. Plus a bit of bought-in avocado & cucumber. No butter needed.
Sounds delicious. I'm not having much success with my lettuce this year,
Had the first mini harvest of my first ever home grown potatoes! I put my hands in the container and groveled around the roots and pulled up two portions of perfect and delicious new potatoes! I will probably turn the container out next week and harvest the rest since the leaves are covered in lots of small brown spots (not sure if it's bad or not). The variety is Rocket.
One of the very early varieties (Rocket/swift) is very prone to tuber blight but can't remember which at the moment, the other is prone to hollow heart which could be a problem with all the rain we have had. I think I'll have a look at the ones in the poly which went in on march/19.
???
Have just come down from the lottie with enough charlotte spuds fo us allto have a taste with our dinner. Planted on Good Friday, thatsjust six weeks :)
crikey cookie-thats quick going!mine were planted(deeply tho!)on g.f. and they are only just peeping out the soil in my raised beds ::)

ooh!tim!i cant wait til our tates are ready-i'll be round for tea tomorrow! ;D
i also am waiting in hopping anticipation for the day0which isnt too far away when EVERY meal is totally homegrown!

Think I got a duff lot of seed potatoes Pentlin Javelin dug up one plant to check only 1 potato and tiny little ones. Leaving them now till mid June.
We had our first early potatoes today - Swift, planted on 15 March. We had to split the sack to the bottom because that is where 1725 g of lovely spuds were hiding. Is that a good yield from three tubers? We found that the other two sacks, Pentland Javelin and Home Guard, were completely waterlogged, so we have made some extra holes in the bottom of the sacks and will wait a couple more weeks to see if they produce a harvest.
A side salad with home grown little gem lettuce, the main course with the new potatoes and dessert made with freshly pulled rhubarb - yes, we are getting there slowly but surely. Now we need some warm sunshine to really bring on the veggies!

I drowned my tub plants, too, so I'm not hoping for much.
wow, well done to all you people harvesting your pots. sooooo envious. i am growing potatoes for the very first time (as we have very bad blight on our plot). they have been in 10 weeks. you've all got me so excited (it's like christmas as a child). had a poke around and they are the size of olives. i just can't wait. can't believe i haven't grown them before!!! ;D ;D ;D
Mouthwatering stuff, Tim - and just a tinge of envy for all you lucky people who have harvested so early - don't expect to dig up our first earlies until (very late) June/July 'tis the highlight of the lottie season!!
Hoping to start next week on my swift potatoes, think I am about two weeks behind on last year, also hoping to have some peas in about ten days time.
Tim I was down at Enstone last Friday is that near to you ?
Had first Rocket for tea, planted 19/3 in Polytunnel, not a great yield but fed six off four plants, and left them in to see if I can coax a few more tubers before we put the other stuff into the poly and need the ground!
;D
practically overnight me rockets have sprouted flowers so i predict a Feast on Friday of First earlies! ;D ;D ;D
kitty
Same shade as me Wicker! ;) Mind you, I've only 2 weeks to go on my first earlies ( Adora and Arran Pilot) so fingers crossed, and I'm comtemplating contemplating digging up some of my I. Kidney a few weeks early. I've 90+ other plants on the go, spread from middle June to early September, which is probably going to be overkill if 1.7Kg from 3 tubers is typical! :o
Still loads of people will have them off me, double figures the last time I heard. Mind you, I must keep the blinking weeds down. I'm going to be busy, busy, busy... ;D
Dave
We had our first harvest of outdoor Arran Pilot last week. Planted them late March. Dug up four plants and managed to feed 3 and had enough left over for a potato salad the next day for one (Me) ;D Well it's allowed seeing as I grew them.
I was hoping for more pots/plant - but they are first earlies, am I right in thinking the yeild isn't as great for them?
Alison
I found my Foremost potatoes flowering this weekend. They were planted in late April though... ???
Can potatoes flower before potatoes are ready?
Mine look quite pathetic compared with last year, despite the horrible frost that whacked them down then.
Earlies went in on April 6th so that's 7.5 weeks so far. At least another month to go, sniff! Can't be helped - was way too cold in March.

Yes. Mine are in flower, but there is nowt ready to eat. Mind you mine have had to recover from 8 inches of snow in April.
Thanks, amphibian ;) So glad I didn't dig them up! Can't wait to harvest new potatoes. ;D
