Bit misleading the title - I'm asking for a volunteer to put together a FAQ on how to post images.
I don't want to do it myself - only because I don't think I can express in 'non techy' words the process.
If we can reach a consensus on how it is done then I will make it a sticky at the top of The Gallery.
Cheers
Dan
Lovely idea, but doesn't it depend a lot on the facility you have? I did a long one for HP some time ago. And do we only mean images, or avatars as well? = Tim
Can not an Avatar be an Image or an Animation ?
[most of you have seen this - I'm just editing out a couple of historical anomalies!]
Jargon-busters and c..p-cutters - please let me know how this should be improved.
It is unfair on my part - I've unashamedly copied, pasted and edited from lots of other people's efforts. The good ideas are theirs (Ina, Tim, Palustris, and others I'm sure) - the mistakes are mine!

How to post Photographs and Images?1 For photos and images inside a posting. For grandmothers - the harder the eggs you can suck, the further down this section you look!
1.1 Is your photo/image
uploaded on to the Internet?
1.1.1 Add your photo to your website and upload.
1.1.2 Lost you? Bad start - sorry! Try one of the photo-sharing sites on the internet; there are several options - have a look at recent "how to" postings for the current favourites. You'll need to follow the instructions and register as a new user on whichever site you choose, and then follow their instructions to upload your photos from your computer to their site.
1.2 Get the
URL of your photo?
Either the URL has to be typed absolutely correctly at 1.3.
OR
It's easier to avoid mistakes by copying the URL. In Internet Explorer, right-click the photo/image, and select properties. A box will open, with (about half-way down) the address/URL - shade the whole address, from "http://.." to "...jpg". Right click and select Copy.
You can now use Right-Click and Paste to insert the URL in 1.3.
1.3 Go to your posting - next to the letter P on your keyboard is a square bracket like so[ Then type img] , type/paste the URL of your photo, then type [/img]. Now click Preview to see if it's worked.
1.4 Problems? - your picture still doesn't show? A few suggestions
- Check the web-page hosting your picture - does it appear there?
- Check that the address/URL is absolutely correct - if you've typed it, try copying it!
- Have you used "square bracket"img"square bracket" before the address/URL, and "square bracket"/img"square bracket" after the address/URL?
1.5 Want to put in more than one photo?; if you've managed one, the rest are a lot easier. Follow the above, so that you have
picture 1 address
picture 2 address
picture 3 address
etc (Remember - type the [ square brackets ], not the ones shown here).
2 Or are you looking for an
image linked to you as a contributor - an
avatar which always appears under your name.
Step 1 - click on your
Profile button. A page will open, and half-way down you'll see Personalised Picture. You have two options -
2.1 Choose one from the list offered?
2.2 Or click the tick box beside "I have my own pic", and enter the URL/address of your chosen image at "http:// " (see 1.2 above for accurately copying the address!) - this could be on your own web-site, or A N Other.
2.3 What sort of picture?
First the curmudgeonly bit - please remember that some A4A users have much older and slower computers? The smaller and faster the image, the less frustrating their experience!
Size -
100 x 100 px (better still 80 x 80 px)
Larger files are automatically resized - but remember us with rubber band power!
Format -
You can use a static ".gif" (small file, neat and quick)
or an animated ".gif" (bigger, fancier, and slower)
or a ".jpg" file (good for avatars which are photos)
Bamboozled? Go on, don't panic, just use the image/animation you've found, and trust the board software to sort it for you - trying to sort the graphic options goes just a bit beyond the scope of this FAQ!
The whole process is a bit fiddly, so feel free to ask for advice on the board. Somebody will have the information or wherewithal to help out!
Hi gavin, thanks for the explanation. Thanks to you its all clear now.
Thanks, Ruud - but not to me!
If it works, it's Tim, Ina and Palustris.
If it doesn't work, it's me!
All best - Gavin
http://www.hpphoto.com/sessions/900111748499/36922847sm.jpg[/img]
Nice way to get there, C, but what's the img thingy doing there?
I still need to hear from someone that you can create a URL on the Canon Image Gateway. Can't figure it. = Tim
Sorry Tim, but you have to have the Canon software which comes with the Camera to access their site, so not having one I cannot get in to see if I can work it out for you.
AOL (my Isp) have just started a picture storage service (like hpphoto) with their latest version (no. 9). I have just uploaded some pictures but cant work out if i can link or post ics from ther to this site.
Has anyone tried this and have any ideas? :-\
Thanks for the thought, Eric - was hoping someone might be using the Canon system. I can send pics to friends but can't get any further. = Tim
Tim,
You can of course post directly from your computer, using the attach picture thing !
Cheers
Dan
Must try - thanks, Dan!!= Tim
Hiya Dan
How do you "post directly from your computer"? I have got Canon zoom browser (came with digital camera) does that do it?
Frogger
Doh
I have tried to add an avatar and it aint appearing. It;'s from Yahoo. anyone got any ideas??
Frogger
Just tried it with Picture Trail and that doesn't work either... help!
Later...
Managed it of sorts, but only by sending myself a message - it's too too hard!
Looks like http://www.photobucket.com/ is a way forward after hpphoto have stopped there service.
Anyone fancy doing a FAQ - I'll make it a sticky at the top of the page.
Also I'll take Gavin's website explanation and make that a sticky.
I'm sure I'm missing the point on this but, IF one only wants to post the odd photo direct from one's PC, and IF one is going to DONATE, as requested, to the Bucket, why not stick with what we've got, & donate here? Not that it helps Dan much?? Can we really expect the service to always be free?
S'pose I've got more money than sense? = Tim
Before going to Photobucket.com (which is FREE unless you wish to donate) you may need to alter the size of image with which ever Photo manipulation program you favour. To get 2 shots side by side, I reduced mine to 250 by 187 pixels. You could play around until you are satisfied with your choice.
Go to Photobucket.com. If not a member Join by following their instructons. If a member then Login.
If sending one picture then Click on Browse
Find and Select your picture in My Pictures. (If you cannot do this then please contact me for more help)
Click on Open
Click on Submit
If uploading more than 1 image then Click on Submit Multple Pictures
Click on the number of pictures you wish to upload.
Click on Browse etc. and repeat as necessary then Click on Submit
Wait.
When the pictures are uploaded you will be told. You may then scroll down to see your pictures.
Below each image are 3 boxes, labelled URL, TAG and IMG
Highlight the text in the IMG box below the picture you wish to send to A4A All you need to do is click on the text once.
Press Ctrl+C (or Edit, Copy)
Go to A4A to eg, Gallery. New topic. Enter Subject.
Move mouse cursor to text entry area and press Ctrl+V (or Edit, Paste)
Text from Photobucket should appear.
Press Preview and hope
There are some clear minds around? = Tim
Picking up on Eric's bit about sizing your pictures - and a plea. Not everybody has super-fast, bang up-to-date, whizz-bang computers? Smaller pics are much less of a strain on the wheeze-phuts, like mine!
All best - Gavin
no
whoops ! trying to post but obviously not paying attention
argghhh
Gavin - see my exemplary effort in 'the bucket'. But then I get complaints about it being too small!! = Tim
I KNOW!!
But how do I post 2 or more, using the in-house attach photo facility, which is so easy for one?? Dan's away, I think, otherwise he would have come back on my previous plea? = Tim
i believe google now have a free piccy post thingy www.google.co.uk frontpage
carl
okok bit late but its worth a try
Downloaded it and its sister prog Hello. Neither is as easy to use as Photo manager and Photobucket and seem to do less.
Hi Palustris, looks like Photobucket has halted any new members at the mo, could I trouble you for the addy of Photomanager please Ive tried it with dot com and got a domain sale. ???
I have my images on Webshots but I believe webshots don't allow image transfer, how true that is I am unsure. :-\
Cheers Roy ;)
Photomanager is part of Hpphoto.com. You have to join that and then download from them.
Photobucket says it is not accepting members today so maybe tomorrow?
According to Dan's thread above Hpphoto.com. have stopped their service, now I'm confused. ???
Roy :-\
Hpphoto have stopped their service for sending individual pictures to sites like this. However, they still have a free storage system which you can use. You can send a link to an album in for example an Email. OR you can post the link on here so people can go and view your photos. As part of their service they provide a simple image manipulation program which is also used to download your photos from your computer to them.
I use it when I have a large number of pictures to resize as it is quicker than Adobe Photoshop.
Photobucket is only a storage facility and it does allow linking for individual pictures to a site like this.
Hope this clears up any inadvertently caused confusion.
Does not? = Tim
In what way Tim?
