Title: weeding seedlings!
Post by: ann hunter on May 21, 2006, 18:05:38
Has ANYBODY got a fool proof way of weeding carrot and beetroot seedlings, which does not involve pulling the babies out at the same time or dislodging their roots?? ???

I'm sure someone on here suggested snipping off the tops at ground level with scissors.  That way you stop them growing, but don't disturb their neighbours.

Certainly sounded logical.

Sorry, I got confused there between weeding and thinning.  ::)

But maybe the same might still apply?

Hi Ann,

The only way I know to do it is very carefully and very often. that way the weeds dont have a chance to develop such a good root system and have less chance of dislodging your seedlings.

The main thing to remember, especially with carrots and beetroot etc is they will need to be thinned out at some point anyway so if you do loose a few its not a disaster.  Infact I did my weeding and started thinning out at the same time last week.

Good luck :)
