Title: aubergines
Post by: caroline7758 on May 21, 2006, 11:39:29
I sowed some aubergines in March and they germinated fine. i moved them out to my unheated greenhouse. They have only grown about 2-3" tall and now the leaves are curling and going yellow. Is there any hope for them?

Oh, dear!! They like heat - in the early stages. Apart from that - they've all been slow this year. Failing that, too wet, too dry? Or, after that long, in need of a feed?

I feed mine a bit of homemade seaweed and nettle tea, they seem to like it. Whilst they like heat mine have been growing quite happily on my patio, they even seem to be enjoying the nasty cold drizzle that we have today.

I think they may have got too wet. Is it worth giving them some TLC or do you think it's too late in the season now for them to catch up?

Can't really advise without seeing - these are my last - they'll go into the cold 'house in a couple of weeks.

They're a lot bigger than mine. Maybe I should have kept them in the house for a bit.

Mine have taken off in the last two weeks - decent size at last, so hoping that they'll catch up soon. Assuming the RSM keeps off...

I have split mine in to two groups now, some are still in the heat and the rest are in cold frames. No real differance between them as yet.

They were potted on into 6" pots 3 weeks ago and are now about 10" tall. Hope to get some outside in a week or two as they are pushing up the lids of the cold frame.

Mine haven't grown much either and were starting to look very sick.  I transplanted them into larger pots last week and since then they've perked up so fingers crossed they'll do some growing now.  I also moved them  as the window they were by was getting a lot of sun so I thought maybe they were getting a little scorched.

Mine are this size, apart from one that got eaten completely by slugs, then resprung from the stump, but branched from soil level. It is a pretty plant for all its suffering.

That's impressive Jerry, mine are still at the 4 true leaves stage. If anything could make me move away from my lovely home with 5 Lotties on the back it would be a small holding in the Loire where I could grow Aubergines outdoors! Villandry here I come!

Jerry - presumably that's your heated bit? - what do you keep the temp at?

Our big(ger) 'house has been a steady 42F at night!!

Hi all,  :D
not really on subject, but reading saddad`s desire for the loire ,I have just been to Villandry & have posted a picture in the gallery of their gardens. They really are worth a visit.

Yes Tim, those are in the heated house, the thermostat is set to come on at 18 degrees celcius and only now comes on for about an hour at night.

The ones in the cold frame are about an inch or so smaller and have been there 3 weeks. The lowest night time temp outside for a month was last night funny enough, 8.5 degrees celcius. They seem fine this morning.
