Title: How much wildlife??
Post by: purple sprouting on May 20, 2006, 11:49:01
...did I see at my allotment yesterday?

I have to admit to never having seen a slow worm until last Saturday when I pulled back some black sheeting and found two of them looking at me.  I wouldn't have minded but they sort of refused to move until my daughter picked them up (very gently) on the end of the spade and put them out of the way of my digging.

Yesterday I saw at least nine slow worms (of course I didn't have my camera!!) and something 'lizardy' about 9inches long, with four legs and a tail made a dash out of some weeds towards and over my wellies at speed.  (Yes, to my embarrassment I did give out a shriek...but only because it startled me and I thought it might get into my boots).

Another thing I observed in two places (under black plastic sheets) were ants apparently tending to small brown/beige grub things.  Has anyone else seen this?

Yes, those are the pupae. The 'lizardy' thing was probably a common lizard.
