Title: Shallots - is it too late?
Post by: ermck1 on May 20, 2006, 11:38:18
Hi

I have just picked up 2 bags of cheap shallots that look ready to plant.

Is it too late? I will probably throw them in and see what happens but dont want to feel too optimistic if it is too late.

Thanks

Mike

Tim, don't the growers dust shallots, onions and potatoes with some fungicide prior to them being sold?

Shallots should be ready to harvest in a months time so I wouldn't think they'll come to much but what the heck, you can't lose anything by trying

That's OK, you're supposed to peel them first anyway ::)

It was always a case of plant on the longest day and crop on the shortest.
But the way the weather is all over the place, I would be tempted to try a few.

Surely you mean plant on the shortest day and crop on the longest! Mine are growing fast and will be ready for harvest in a few weeks. but it wouldn't do any harm to try a few, though I wouldn't expect to get anything this late. You'll probably get a crop off them next year.
