they DO have them, and they DO sell them.
was in there for beer and voddie tonight ( :P) and some happened to be sitting on a cart with broken cardboard boxes. took me a while to find a nice young man to ask if they were being sold or disposed of ............ 8 for 99p ! so i got 16.
all you have to do is ask ! (i did ask if they regularly got rid of them and NYM said aye, they're usually out the back).
after sitting for a couple of hours in a traffic jam (some bloody main road into glasgow has collapsed) that cheered me up tonnes.
ok off to quaff the voddie !!!
:P
Yes, this I can confirm and even exceed!! Was in my local Morisons 2 weeks ago and decided to have a look for these famous buckets around the flower stand. There, tucked behind the barrow stand thingy that has the flowers on it were lots of buckets, taped together into 12s with tape that had printed on it '8 for 99p'. Now, either they had a glut and decided to give away 4 extra buckets in each set or someone on the fruit and veg section can't count!
I got 12 (buckets not sets, that would be going too far!), used them to plant my tomatoes, then went back for 12 more plus 12 for my mum
Result!!
Plottie :) :)
RIGHT!
My Sunday Morning Sweep - Aldi, £ shop, Home Bargains, Wilkos, will now take me further afield to Morries. And if they DON'T have black buckets to sell me at a knock-down price, there will be war...a knock-down, blood spattering War amongst the flower bunches. Petals everywhere there will be....
btw KP....while I'm there I'll try to get the blue baskets you're using for your ring culture. My 'house is the same size as yours - 6x4 - how many fit along the length, please?
I buy my black buckets, and my blue plastic crates, from our local florist/fruiterer - it's not a fancy shop, but your normal/average fruit shop. They sell them for 10p a go - so I suppose that makes mine 10 for a pound! :) Worth asking if you have a shop near you.
Ours also do some large white plastic boxes with slatted lids for 50p. I have considered buying them, but then can't think what I would use them for. :)
i had 5 side by side, now fearing overcrowding, i've turned them 90 degrees and have four end to end along one side with the 5th turning the corner. i'm going to put a couple of courgettes into the blue boxes as well, and my cucumber (thanks weedbusta ;D) and a couple of aubergines along the other side.
i am running out of space FAST !!!! WHY did i not listen and get a bigger g/h ??? :P and i've got four growbags as well that need putting somewhere, with something in !!!! ::)
i need to get the lilies out of there really, but they're so tall that one blast of the wind and they'll be snapped in bits.
i picked up another 5 blue boxes yesterday, promptly dropped them getting them out of the car, so that's one less corner i need to drill drainage holes in :o.
once the voddie from last night has worn off i'll be out there ......... 8)
On checking MrsKP's pretty maids, the blue crates I am buying for 10p (just to prevent a rush to the fruit shop) are the mesh ones I have seen on a photo Tim posted. Not the solid ones MrsKP has.
Though I think the white plastic ones for 50p would be eminently suitable for use in this fashion. They're taller, and a bit narrower, but they'd do the job.
Courgettes in the 'house, KP ???
In summary, then.....how many blue boxes (with contents) can I fit in, do you think?
I visited morrisons just after mothers day and managed to get 30 black pots for 99p ! Obviously a good time to visit.
Alishka - I got some plastic tubs similar to MrsKP's from Wilkinsons - they were around 90p each.... unfortunately my store only had 6 so I'll have to pay another visit ...

i'd say in your 6x4 (i've got a 6 x 6 dontchaknow) 10 round the edges and you could get another 4 or 5 if you wanted to double row it, but then you'd be leaning over the first rowbreaking the tops off things to get to the back one :o
wot about this ?
i'd say in your 6x4 (i've got a 6 x 6 dontchaknow)
Woman of Property, eh ;D
And budding Picasso too ;D ;D
OK.....given that my door opening is in the middle of a 6' run......can you give me the base measurements, please?
Ta.
Mc55.....30 for 99p? that's giving me a good bargaining edge ;) Many thanks!
lordy want me to come and plant em for ya too :P each box 16" x 13" approx.
i reckon you'd get about 12 in with no probs. two rows length ways along the back wall. two each side of the door end on.
;D
i think i've just poisened meself cutting the bottoms out of the buckets with a hot knife. :o

Heavens sake, someone......please please guide me to this AMAZING smile? I'm developing really deep frown lines looking for it :(
Mrs. KP....when I get my hunnerds of black pots tomorrow, I'll be using my hacksaw (if the finger currently bandaged with sellotape cos of trying to open a tin of corned beef with a knife yesterday) will allow me to hold it :-[
Thanks for the measurements of the boxes. Will report back tomorrow on my buys ;D
Excitin innit?
Found The Amazing Smile ;D ;D ;D - lookin in wrong gallery :o
in the end a serrated knife (now labelled "the garden knife" did just as well.
ouch for your finger (corned beef cans should be banned) !!!
another f*g break ........ i'm soaked ......... again.
blue boxes now turned back through 90 degress to their original places..... ran out of room ..... again.

10p for one of those?
10p? :o they're the ones I get free at Aldi on Sundays 8) - they put them out by the bottle bank (which I invariably happen to be visiting.....)
If you have one drill a hole with a spade bit, get a jigsaw blade in there and in seconds the bottom is gone with next to no smell!

What a good idea! Shall velcro the Barbie pink crates too and I'm
sure I've got some diamante bits left over from doing up me wellies last winter...what else is there to do on a wet Sunday afternoon?
Thanks, KP ;) ;D
Deserving of a special post all on it's own.....
I went to Morrisons
I spent ££££s on petrol to get there
I got soaked walking from the car to the shop
I looked for the mythical black buckets
I found
zilch :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
:'( want one of mine ? ;D
Not quite the same as black buckets, but our local morrisons is selling black and green grape vines.
I bouht one (black) last year and it is going great guns! :D Bought two more this month, have been looing out for them for ages. They are a hardy variety and only cost a couple of quid so vimo here we come, hick!
Went to morries this morning, I got some lovely hibiscus £2.45 each. They do well down here in the garden for the summer. Then I shall chop them back and over-winter them in the poly. Missus has nicked one for the kitchen window sill, the last one she had there had a flower every day for about 10 months.
I have a hot spot in the garden where I have mirabalis, datura, hibiscus and a bourgainvillea. All of these have been purchased at supermarkets at very reasonable prices. Cut them down when the frosts start and chuck them in a corner of the poly until the frosts are over.
I got some of the elusive buckets, don't know why really ??? I expect they will come in for something one day.
ACE you're growing my two most fave...hibiscus and bougainvillea...didn't know booglie could do so well here. Love it.
and buying black buckets just cos they were there? Winding me up...you're ALL winding me up. :'( ;) ;D
i'd love to grow something like bougainvillea but don't think it would like being drown 28 days out of 30.
see bucket - have bucket ! don't give up Lish, there'll be buckets for you yet (after the season has finished obviously). :P

Now there is the trick, keep it in a big pot, south, south/west facing wall, and cover the compost to keep most of the rain out. They do not like a lot of water but love being sprayed on a warm evening.
You will have to remember our climate on the island gives us a longer growing season, why do you think I live here.
let's all have our meet-up on ACE's island ;D......
KP I've sort of solved me bucket problem...remember that I swiped all the baskets they had on the shelves yesterday at Wilkos - 6 Barbies & 2 blue? Well, drove back from Morries wet and fed up & called in Wilkos....they'd got tubs, big enough size, 45p each( :() - but just eight of them.....a sign! but £3.60 against 80p ain't the best bargain of the day :-\
So! 7 toms and 1 g/house cuc (Marketmore) now have homes.....deciding which tom is problematic - my gardening book's been left out on a table in the rain for the past 3 days or so. All my careful notes a blue blur.....
Prepare to repel boarders! As the ferries will charge you over £60 for the weekend, I don't think you will have many takers. But if you have any beachwear like the girl in the watershed you could always try and swim across ;D. As there is a glut of black buckets here, you could put one on each foot and walk back.

i'm gonna have to pass as this rain gets in EVERYWHERE !!! :'(
where are you ? don't think i've trawled hard enough to find out. :(
With abject apologies to Alishka.............I took neighbour for her weekly shopping trip to morrisons as her car was out of action otherwise I would never have gone (Asda girl me ;D ) and was attracted by some wonderful blue senetii that I'd been hankering after and there beside them were the elusive black buckets 8 for a £1 :) So I had to didn't I. ;)
ACE Only four weeks and I will be there ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D
Don't forget your passport ;D, if you get the chance try mingellas ice cream.
Ace. We are going to Park Resorts Thorness Bay site this year.
I bet you are glad you are not going a week later

ACE We arrive on 17th June. Looks like festival will be finished. Hope they don't spoil anything on the island :)
Local Morrisons this morning, 99p for 18 black 10" pots
:o
S'Burys staff had inavertently left two flower buckets near the trolley park as I was on my way out, couldn't leave them there all lonely, could I?
8)
Katy, how considerate and performing community service too !
;D ;D
Kaypee, what have you done with your pot bottoms?
I used a hot tomato slicing knife to cut the bases off mine tonight (and yes, thanks, the cut on my thumb's stopped bleeding now ;)) and then used that pointy tool to make 3 holes in a couple of them - wiggled the tool around a bit & enlarged them - they'll be the supports for 3 canes in a wigwam. Neat trick, eh?
wish you'd have posted that before the bin men came on tuesday :'(
never mind, i've still got about another 8 to attack ;D ;D ;D
A bucket was always a good thing when I was courting, if the girl was shorter than me, I stood her on it, but if she was taller I put the bucket on her head and I pulled myself up on the handle. It sounds better than poking 3 holes in my bottom with a pointy thing.
Went on a really long detour to get home this pm just to go to Morrisons, in search of the elusive black buckets. You really have to hunt for them dont you? but found them and had the last two sets. It seems that staff in the Acton branch can count so only 8 for 99p but I ain't arguing ;D
By the sounds of things, I need to stock up on plasters before attempting to turn them into bottomless pots ;)
;D ;D ;D ACE
SMP.....don't 'do' plasters. Micropore's the stuff. A must in my first aid box, garden tool bucket - and knife drawer :D
And I cannot believe that you're all finding these black buckets :(..do Aldi have them for sale? Going there on Sunday - gonna do a growbag sweep there.
I managed to bag meself some of these wonderful Mozza'a buckets and the lady at the till suggested a red hot poker for the bottom. Thought she was a bit barmy at the time, but obviously she had a point! :D

So would you recommend the grape vines then? I spotted them last week and spent time debating them, then decided no - but if they're good, I may well pop back. Did anyone get any of the fruit trees they were selling? I intended to get an apple tree and a cherry tree but my procrastination meant that I missed out, as per usual. :-\
Went to Morrisons today and hadn't intended to get black buckets but while waiting for my mum by the cafe, I saw them and they screamed to me, come and buy me and my friend here for £1.98. So, 16 buckets is a bit much but sure I can find something to stick in them.
Alishka, SMP is right, sometimes they're hidden away under the display tables / flowers - keep looking .... 24 buckets languishing in my local Morrisons ... sliced my bottoms off with secateurs
Oh, just a thought - does your Morrisons sell cut flowers ?? If not, that'll be why you can't find them
...cut flowers at my Morries?....yep, they do....they're all displayed in (permanent!) green display stands.......
grrrrrrr :'(
Lish ..... ;D
My Morrisons has got the flowers on display in big green square buckets and it was only by chance i spotted some black ones one day.
Have you actually asked the store ?? do they not get them at all ?
half mine are gonna be used for aubergines but they're nowhere ready so the buckets are just sitting there .... i feel guilty !! lmao
;D
Used one today, to wash the car, which one shall I use tomorrow? I shall take some to gardeners world live. So those without can approach anybody and shout 'YOU ARE NOBBY thingy AND I CLAIM MY FREE BUCKET'
If you are right you might get one, if you are wrong the men in white coats will take you away.
I might, just might, hold you to that ACE ;D
