i am absolutely gutted,.....the damage caused by a flash hail storm that lasted 10 minutes is incredible, most of my plants have suffered damage especially the hostas which before the storm where perfect but are now a mess/....i wouldnt care but i have just sold my house and the new omners will be moving in in 2 weeks time and i had taken particular care of the plants so they could enjoy them at their best but it has been a waste of time,..our lass is devastated,....i feel like packing in, what with vine weevils, scale insects, green fly, white fly, black spot, rust, mildew, leather jackets,slugs,..the list goes on, is it worth it ?,,fed up tezz. :'( :( >:( >:(
I know how you feel Tezz, many years ago (2nd June 1998 to be exact) I had a similar thing happen to me.
I was in the midst of planting my Dahlia plants out when a storm threatened.
As it was about lunch time I left my plants (in pots) lying on their sides and went for lunch with the intention of being indoors during the impending downpour, but I never expected 'hail'
When I got back the hailstorm had chopped up my plants in a similar manner to someone putting them on a chopping board and cutting them up into 1" long pieces.
I lost just over 50 plants, all they were fit for was growing on as pot tubers for the following years cuttings.
I don't mind telling you it nearly brought me to tears, considering I had nursed them along for the past four months.
My point is Tezz; don't give up things have a way of mending themselves, in my case our Dahlia society got together and gave me some plants to tide me over the summer.
In your case tell the new tenant what happened.
As long as it's only plants it's not quite so bad. I remember being hit by a sudden storm like that on Sgurr a Greadaidh (pronounced 'Greta') on Skye. The ridge is about two feet high with sheer drops on both sides, there was nowhere to hide, and it was impossible to move. i just hung on till it passed, and I certainly felt as though I'd been chopped into one-inch bits!
I was once caught in hail on Striding edge, Helvelyn in the Lakes..
So far not had to face such ferocity in the allotments...
:o
I was nearly blown clean off it one wild winter's day.
