Title: Calabrese bed
Post by: jonny211 on May 18, 2006, 11:09:45
Howdo,

I've read that brassica's like the soil they're planted in to be firm, but I ~think~ I've also read that calabrese likes a fine, friable soil. Which one do they prefer as I don't want them to struggle but also don't want them blown over.

Also what height should I expect them to reach (building a netting cage to keep the skyrats out).

Cheers!

Jon

I plant mine in a firm seed bed and tred round them to firm them in and I am on heavy clay. They do well.

For height I would allow between 2 and 3 foot max bepending on variety.

Looks like I'll have to get my extra large stomping boots on to firm them in.

Many thanks Jerry.

i always prick mine out into 4" pots then tranplant into growing bed before they out grow the pot.  When planting i bury the plant so deep that the first two leaves are submerged and the next two up are only just visible.  I do this to create sturdier stocky plants that will withstand wind better.

This works well for me and when potting on i always bury as much stem as i dare.  A lot of plants will grow more roots from the stem which you have just buried.  This especially includes tomatoes and cucumbers.
