Hi
I have 2 potato barrels which i have no intention of using for potatoes. I bought them last year and the crop was so poor plus i now have a lottie to plant pots on.
I have filled them with compost and plan on growing something in them in my greenhouse and am wondering if you can give me any suggestions as to what that something could be. . I was thinking carrots as we are on clay and won't get a great crop on the lottie but will they be ok left in the greenhouse all summer. (jerry after just viewing your photo i will def plant carrots in them in January next year :D )They are such deep pots that i think they'd be wasted on tomatoes or chillis.
What do you think?? Any other suggestions?
Paula
I have several suggestions.
You could grow climbing french bean Rustico, which is self pollinating, or runner bean Red Rum. They will both give you an earlier crop if you grow them in containers indoors. Courgette Partenon is another one to grow indoors.
The variety of pea 'Half Pint' from Seeds of Distinction. is another we have had great success with.
It depends what you want. The above suggestions I have made, are what we do to get earlier crops in containers, earlier than we would have got from the garden.
I would have to add the proviso, that it is probably too late to sow the above mentioned seeds to get an early crop for this year, as the plants we have are very well estsblished ..

I think the problem with planting it up in the greenhouse will be the summer temperatures... so I'm not sure whether carrots or most other veg would do better outside (in or out of the pot).
Outside, you could get a wigwam of climbing french/borlotti beans, or nasturtians (leaves and flowers for salads). Or both together.
Inside (with support where needed) how about a choice of: tomato, cucumber, melon, aubergine, sweet pepper, tomatillo, groundcherry/husk cherry/cape gooseberry, litchi tomato, or perhaps saddad has an achocha seed left? Room for basil round the edges?
