Title: Friend or Foe
Post by: Paulines7 on May 16, 2006, 17:30:07
Can anyone tell me what this is and if it is a friend or foe please?  I keep coming across them in the garden and usually feed them to the chickens.   ;D

Centipedes (quick) are good - millipedes (slow) are bad.

That's a common soil-dwelling centipede which must eat a lot of invertebrates over its lifetime. I never deliberately harm a centipede, they're too useful as predators.

Chap I know says one way to remember what is friendy and what isn't, is the speed at which they travel, because things that attack plants are relatively slow.
It makes some sort of sense because plants can't run away from attackers. Expect there will be exceptions though.
