Title: What would YOU pay for a cabbage seed??
Post by: tim on May 16, 2006, 12:25:31
I was horrified this morning - sowing some Savoy - looked for the rest of the seed to do another row later - but that was it - 30 seeds.
Made the mistake of checking the price a few moments ago - £2.99.

TEN pence per seed? What is this coming to??

The only thing to beats that was my lunch at the IWM canteen last week - the cost of a ladle of 'cottage pie' (I say '...' because most of the meat was carrots) was..................£6.85. And one had to wipe ones own table.

You can beat that?

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if we've 'met' properly before, I'm kind of new. I found a lovely black foliaged ornamental pepper on google images whilst looking for 'black foliage' - Ornamental Pepper Black Pearl - Capsicum annuum Black Pearl. Has anyone ever found these seeds at anything less than £2.75 for 5 seeds? A friend of mine found them on ebay. Apparantly it's a new plant! But...... really?????? how much! :o

umm, a packet of tomato seeds (Sultana) I bought from Dobies... didn't check the number of seeds/pack... until I opened the pack up and found only 10 seeds in there (for £2.05) - 20p/seed... made even worse that only 2 of the 10 seeds germinated (and one of these is very poor) despite virtually all the seeds from my other varieties all germinating in the same conditions... - therefore a massive £1/germinated seed...  :o

Let's hope I get some good toms off these two plants  ::)

I was shocked to find only 4 seeds in my packet of Big Max which cost £3.69 ... fortunately they have all germinated.

Bought some cauliflower plants for .40p each at the w/e which I thought was cheap til I saw SuperSprout's price.

Have failed miserably to germinate any tomatoes this year, so bought one from the local garden centre last night - £1.50 for a Juliette 6-7" high, eek. Must try harder next week.

Retail seed prices really pee me off. Someone mentioned the price of cucumbers, yes indeed-it would cost someone more per seed than to darken my darken my door and buy a well established plant.

Cleo, Armitages does have a reputation for being rather expensive - at least the tom looks healthy / strong.  We were at Hunmanby (nr Scarborough) on Saturday and I got a cucumber for .50p - much more like it.

I wouldn't pay much for a cabbage seed, even if it was the last survivor of the precise strain that Diocletian gave up being emperor to cultivate. Trouble is, it's hard to get true seed off them. I wouldn't complain so much for an extra-special tomato, since they self-pollinate, and one plant would give me loads of seed.
