Title: Black Plastic
Post by: Rosyred on May 14, 2006, 02:24:31
Reading the item on sweetcorn people tend to say use black plastic on the ground and plant in it. Where do you get this black plastic from as black bags are too thin and would you use this method for cabbages?? :o

Try a builders yard. Or use cheap pond liner.

Hi rosyred, I use either perforated black sheet or woven plastic for ground cover, so that the rain can get through into the soil. The perforated black sheet is cheaper if you're going to plant through, the woven stuff will last several seasons.

It's worth shopping around. Your local garden centre(s) might sell it by the yard in different widths, or have a look at these suppliers:

Tesco's have been selling packs of perforated black plastic sheeting.  I have used it to cover my beds that will be used for toms and cucumbers.  I also plan to use it for my sweetcorn/squash bed.
