Hi, we keep out 4 horses right next door to our allotment and have oodles of manure from over the winter.
Usually the local gardeners take it away but as I couldn't get any straw last winter they have said they don't want the shavings/manure mix.
It seems to be rotting down underneath and I wondered if there was anything we could use it for???
Just seems a shame to have to burn it when it's full of goodness. ??? ???
Shavings will rot they just rot a lot slower so the manure isn't ready for use so soon.
I use horse manure based on shavings. I tend to use 2 year old manure and it is very good.

shavings will make your compost acid, also they deplete nitrogen so you would have to balance it out with something like Chook manure, then it would be ok.
I wish I had a ready supply like that. Stack it until rotted, then it will be black gold ...

The manure I use is horse manure mixed with shavings and straw, it's 2 year old and beautiful, when they deliver it's tipped off the back of a truck and is black and steaming. If your manure is from this last winter I'd say you need to let it sit for a year, perhaps use it in the autumn. :)
Thanks for the advice. We also have a readily available supply of goat poo (which really stinks but I presume can go on the garden too)
Having the horses close can be useful but they do tend to try and defy gravity by reaching over the fences into the veg patch!!! and of course all of the fences have to be goat proof.
