Title: How can I dig out my Forsythia...?!!
Post by: fozzylozzy on May 09, 2006, 08:07:42
I'm having problems trying to dig out my Forsythia - it's been in the ground for 5 or so years and has grown particularly large! Now I'm trying to dig it out and am finding it extremely difficult, as it had become very deep rooted.

Any tips before I break my tools!! ;D

In such situations I dig down around the roots as far as possible & then just cut through them. They don't re-shoot & will just rot away without problems.

Unless you object to weedkillers, its easier just to cut off as near to ground levell as you can and treat the stump with weedkiller making sure you apply it to all the bark above ground. It will then rot away all by itself...slowly ;)
I small bowsaw is ideal to cut it off or if you have one acurved pruning saw.
