Title: Is it too late..
Post by: bluenose on May 08, 2006, 14:25:33
To plant my main crop of King Edward potatoes. When I took my allotment on it was in a fine old mess. I have only managed to clear a space for my main crop this weekend, have I missed the boat or should I just wing them in am see what happens?

I hope not as I was planting mine yesterday - Maris Piper and Pink Fir Apple. What with holidays, bad weather and a waterlogged plot it's taken me until now just to get the ground ready!

Cheers,
Rob ;)

Should be ok to put them in now I would have thought. My main crops have only just surfaced.

why not stick a few in big pots or old compost bags (a few inches of compost, then potato, then a couple of inches of compost, then top up compost as potato grows until the pot is full) - you might get a slightly earlier crop that way.

Not too late yet, but watch out for blight at the end of August, better to sow 2nd earlies or early mains which tuber (bulk up) sooner than true mains or late mains like Pink Fir/Arran Victory!

I planted in early May one year after a freezing cold April. I got a decent crop, so it should work.

I went to Wisley Gardens last Thursday and noticed they still had potatoes chitting in one of the greenhouses.  I spoke to the gardener and said that I hadn't yet planted my King Edwards and was I too late.  He said no and that they still had some to plant.   He said it wouldn't hurt to let them carry on chitting.  ;D

I have run out of room in the plots that are dug so it may still be a week or so before I get them in.  As long as they are ready and do not spoil before the Autumn frosts for I have plenty of other varieties to keep me going during the summer including some in pots that I hope will be ready in June.

I have 3 rows left to plant, it's not a problem, you can still get a decent harvest planting maincrop spuds in early June

Hi
No it is not too late.. i can say that with total confidance as we didn't get our plot until last June and the first thing we did was dig over a patch and throw in some half eaten king edward seed pots.  We left them in until october, i think we might have watered them once or twice but really we neglected them quite badly, and we had a huge harvest....( i would post a pic but not sure how to.)

Good luck and go for it.

I got my plot in May last year and hadn't dug enough to put in spuds. In June a lottie neighbour gave me some of the spuds he was putting in in June 'to get new potatoes for Christmas'. They had chits like a mangrove. I got a reasonable crop in November - not quite Christmas, but who's complaining?
