Title: when is purple sprouting broccoli finished?
Post by: Svea on May 06, 2006, 12:29:32
our PSB has been doing very well for the last month and a bit - at times we havent been able to give the stuff away fast enough.

now, the plants only produce very thin shoots which are trying to flower almost immediately. everything looks very leggy - is it time to pull them up? is the weather too warm now for them to produce thick shoots?

Ours has had it in snowy Derby as well, if you have space  9* Perrenial  is a bit later and is still going strong, never managed to keep the plants for more than 3-4 years though!

ok, so i'll yank them out. that's fine :)
they have kind of slowly collapsed on themselves too and are now obstructing the path a little. so wont be sorry to see them go :)

despite what i said a few months ago (complaining about them taking lots of space for no discernable benefit) will eat my words and definately grow them again this year.
which reminds me, i will have sow some soon :)

thanks

Slightly off topic, what do we do with the remains of Purple sprouting Broc? will those tough stalks compost or do we burn e'm? ???

Hi Roy,  cut the roots off and put them in the dustbin, (in case of clubroot),
then put the rest thro a shredder and use that as a mulch around any fruit bushes you may have. In a year that mulch will have rotted into the soil.

Left as they are, they take a couple of years to rot down, but if you chop them up, they break down a lot quicker.

ours have been chopped back, as there are more starting to grow, so will see what happens, before

deciding to rip em up!
