Title: Rhubarb Harvest!
Post by: Spookyville on May 06, 2006, 12:16:18
Harvested 5.5KG of Rhubarb this morning from the garden. Hate the stuff myself though - parents and friends getting it. Noticed that slugs and snails are attacking it quite vigoursly - leaves are shredded and quite a few stems nibbled. Also the very small shoots near the bottom were yellow and rotting.

Any tips for securing the crop? There are some tyoe of chives or onions planted around and under them as well to deter something...

Has it been split in recent years? If not a bit of rot in the middle would be normal, the new leaves tend to be yellow on big plants until they find the light.
It makes great Jam withGinger!

not sure if it has been split to be honest - only moved in to house in December and it was already in situ.

It may want building up a bit - grass cuttings or anything like that would be good. Not much eats it if it's healthy, since it's packed with oxalic acid. If the clumps are  crowded, split it in the autumn after it dies back.
