Title: Can't believe it...
Post by: Katinkka on May 05, 2006, 16:46:20
The council have been and rotavated my entire allotment for me!  I'm so pleased!  So I guess I have to pull out all the weeds?  Or can I just get planting?

i would suggest a sweep of the area - with a fork if need be, and remove anything with long tap roots. those are the offenders you dont want. also anything with rhyzomes, and bindweed.

if it's only snippets of leaves lying about, see that they wilt then they wont do any harm (annuals), i.e. wont reroot

You should be able to rake any chopped weeds off the surface now, which will enable you to see the resultant condition of the ground. After a couple of days, any substantial weeds should start to show their faces, and make it easier for you to tackle them.

In essence, don't regard rotovating as cleaning the ground, merely making it easier to clear afterwards. Hoeing the weeds off as they show should make good inroads.

Good luck!
