Title: Pear tree
Post by: Palustris on May 05, 2006, 14:33:32
I know I keep posting pictures and maybe boring you all to death, but I wish you could see this tree in real life, the picture does not do it justice. This is a 60 to 70 foot tall perry pear tree. Also what the picture does not show is the huge number of every kind of bee humming all over it.

Boring me rigid Eric!  ;) ;)

Bumper crop this year then - bet Anne is rifling through her cookery books as we speak planning alsorts of wonderful creations!  Tut, pears are my fave hard fruit, my 2 year old tree has 2 clusters of blossom so I am keeping everything crossed that I get to have at least one of my very own home grown pears.

Antiquity! Hope you have a proper fruit-picking ladder, Eric?

This is the best that we can do - all that is left of a pear that, in 'the olden days', wrapped right around the back of the house.

Now it's only half a tree.

The Perry pear does get rather big. Nice to see yours though Tim.
First of all we don't bother with the pears, they are hard and tasteless even when stewed in red wine. If anyone wants to attempt perry then they are welcome, at their own risk to come and pick them.
We have an approximate idea of the age of the tree, a local man (the 'drainage' expert actually) told us that his mother planted the tree when she lived in our house. Well he is retired so the tree must be getting on for 70 years old. It is riddled with woodworm, but the woodpeckers love it, as do the resident crows.
