Title: potted palms
Post by: littlegem on May 05, 2006, 11:12:02
We have 2 palms in 18" terracot pots, one is a windmill palm, dont know the other, what do i feed them with (they're looking a bit brown) and what do i mulch them with? also, do i need to repot every year? Thanks

If they are kept indoors I'd say not enough water, outdoors too much water not easy to save when they go brown :( assuming one is a Trachycarpus fortunei  ??? it should survive temps down to -12.7ºC and I'll guess the other to be a date palm (CIDP) with long whispy fronds? if so they are much tender -6.3°C and don't like getting their feet wet in winter. :-\

You could try knocking them out of the pots and checking the root ball see if they are a healthy and slightly moist, if wet and very dark colour they have probs rotted :(

I have only applied Miraclegrow or chicken pellets diluted for my palms.

Best of luck ;)
