Title: pesky pests
Post by: cathsc on May 04, 2006, 23:02:09
hello there,
my first post, ahem
outside in my tiny back garden ive got a compost bin, homemade, and its got tons of little white flys that have gone everywhere in the back garden, firstly are these white flys?
and secondly are these going to present a problem to the small, courgette, french bean and brussle sprout plants?
thanks a bunch
cathsc

Hi there!
Sorry I do not have the answer, but would like to say welcome.  I am also very new myself.
I also have millions of white flies when I open my compost bin (dalek type), but they do not look like the normal white fly that attacks plants and they do not appear to have settled on any plant - yet.  So I am not too worried at the moment.
Hope someone can answer your question soon.

Add some paper, cardboard or straw to your heap to 'dry' it out a bit and then the white fly should be less of a problem.  I think they are the aphid white fly but not positive.

cathsc & freesia. Can't answer your question, still a novice!!!! I don't remember saying welcome to either of you so a big welcome to A4A. We seem to have had  quite a number of new members lately (brilliant) but  in my old age I can't remember who I have said welcome to ;D Enjoy.

If they are whitefly then they will be more of a problem to the sprouts Cathsc than courgettes or beans. Try looking under the leaves of any brassicas to see if they have settled there.
