My children's school was closed today because it was being used as a polling station, so I decided to take them to Chenies Manor in Buckinghamshire (open only on Wednesdays, Thursdays and bank holiday Mondays). While the girls got lost in the maze I took a few pictures of the tulips and kitchen garden:

The black one is the darkest flower I've ever seen. Not sure I like it though...

I can't remember what it's called, but its definitely NOT Queen of the Night. All the tulips grown at Chenies are supplied by Bloms bulbs. Unfortunately they only list the summer flowering bulbs on their website at the moment, but you could request a catalogue. http://www.blomsbulbs.com/
What a lovely place, have made a note to visit some time :)
thanks for the link d :)

Best time to visit is now (tulip time) or late summer (dahlia time). The house is worth a visit too. We went last October, and it was haunted for Halloween: ghosts sitting under the stairs, wolves' legs sticking out from under the bedclothes, skeletons at the dining table etc. Quite amateurishly done, but all the more fun for it!
Where is this place?
In Buckinghamshire (I think so anyway; I drove past a sign saying welcome to Buckinghamshire). Chenies village lies off the road between Rickmansworth and Amersham (close to Chorleywood).
Good job it wasn't Dick Chenie's manor or it would all have been concreted over ;D
