I planted some cheap bulbs one year and that's when the trouble started. The next year I planted my tulips in pots but I didn't replace all the compost  :-[ and the new tulips succumbed too >:(. So I suppose it's down to good hygiene. So now I always replace ALL the compost and clean the pots thoroughly. I do grow some in the borders too, but there is one area where I've had trouble with tulip fire, so I have to be careful not to move any soil from one area to another. But fingers crossed, this year I've had no problems.
