I planted a ginger root (inside in a pot)some months ago, it sprouted and reached a height of 17". It is now wilting, do I now dig up the root? Do I need to do anything to keep or clean the root?
Hi Crash,
I love ginger and we use a lot of it so this has caught my interest, did you plant a root that you buy to use for cooking or is it meant for growing on?
I will be watching the replies you get on this so I can have a go!
Thanks for the idea :D
Donna
I had a piece in the cupboard that started sprouting so I googled it and planted it! If you google it, click on the first link that comes up thats what I did apart from planting in the spring. Kept inside on a windowsill and uptil this week was looking ok, leaves were starting to discolour now witling so I think its ready but will wait for more replies before doing anything. If it hasn't worked what have I lost, answer about 10p!
;D Okedoky, I'll give it a try then, thanks for that!
Donna.
If it's wilting, it's probably unhappy for some reason - does it need more water, bigger pot, to be moved away from the windowsill? It should live rather longer than a couple of months (ie years) - won't have had time to grow much since you planted it.
You harvest simply by chopping off part of the root and repotting the rest of the plant.
I gather they need quite a humid atmosphere to grow (at least that's what the bloke in India told me)... maybe it's unhappy in dry, direct sunlight?
Looks like its dead! It's gone yellow in just over a day.
