Title: My tomatoes have stopped growing!!
Post by: sally_cinnamon on May 01, 2006, 19:32:26
Hello all,
Just a quick question - my tomatoes have stopped growing for apparently no reason, does anyone have any idea why?

I had three seedlings, one teeny weedy one - which technically should have been discarded but I felt mean so kept it - and two normally growing ones.  Now the weedy one is growing brilliantly and is at least three times bigger than the other two "normal" ones which have stopped at about three inches high with two sets of true leaves... What is going on?!?!? ??? ??? ???   They are all living in the same type of pots, were repotted at the same time and live the same patio window... Is it worth me keeping them or should I start again with some others?

If they aren't dead I would hang on to them...I posted very similarly a couple of weeks ago and now they are a foot high and bushy :)

Oh good, that's what I wanted to hear - I'd feel awful if I had to throw the poor little things away!  I will give them some extra TLC then, in that case.  Thanks! ;D

Sally, mine are doing exactly the same, that is, they're doing nothing....still, my theory is that if it isn't dead, it might not all be lost. :)

Must ask the question; are they blind, i.e. have they a growing tip?

This can be a fairly common problem.

If this is the case nip out the top and with a bit of luck they will throw new growth from the leaf axils.

If growing as cordons allow the strongest shoot to develop, if growing as a bush let them all develop.

It is possible that they might have been checked by cold draughts from cool evenings. Why some and not others is a mystery though. Or possibly overwatering, tomatoes can be rather sensitive sometimes !

It's possible mine have got cold, they are in a plastic greenhouse, though I do keep it religiously closed at night.

They're about 3" tall with 2 main leafs - they look happy enough, they're just puny.  I was really proud of them till I saw the monsters Homebase are selling!  :o

I'll take a look this evening to see if there's anything to pinch out, though I suspect I would need to use tweezers!
