Title: Cape Gooseberries
Post by: Paulines7 on May 01, 2006, 10:36:01
I have a problem folks and would be grateful for your advice.   :-\

I bought two varieties of seeds, Golden Berry and Physalis Edulis and sowed the seeds on my windowsill at the beginning of March.  They germinated and I pricked them out into small pots but they are just not growing.   :(

I moved them to my unheated greenhouse about 2 weeks ago.  They are now about ½ inch high but look very delicate and the lower leaves keep turning white and dropping off.  Everything else I have grown has been given the same treatment and are now very healthy.  My tomatoe and cue plants are about a foot high and are very sturdy.    ;D  Should I sow some more Cape Gooseberry seeds in the hope that they will do better or do you think mine will suddenly start growing?  Your help in this matter is much appreciated.

Sorry, what I meant to say was, they will take off, they need a long growing period and warm conditions, so you should see some action this month with luck :)

Hi Pauline,
I'm trying Cape gooseberries for the first time also, they are very slow at the moment, was only wanting a few to try in the greenhouse besides the toms and cues, peppers and aubs, but as usual too many (400, so they'll have to go to friends or the plant sale, don't know if they'll survive outside up here ,
I could try a few in the garden?...I'm sure yours will pick up as summer is on it's way :P

I tried cape gooseberries 3 years ago I found they were very vigerous
when they got going the ones on the allotment took over  but never ripend
the one in the greenhouse (potted) grew tall , had ripend fruit which were a bit sharp Ithink it was because they needed to ripen quicker then they did
conclusion too much work for too little reward
:( :( :(

Mine germinated okay, got pricked out... then moved to unheated greenhouse... where they did nothing (compared to everything else) and some of the leaves whitened and shrivelled... so I moved them back inside a few days ago, having decided they simply couldn't cope with the much lower temperatures. Starting to perk up a little.

At least I know now that other people have had problems with them and it's not just something I am doing to them.  I think I will leave them in the greenhouse now and hope for the best.   :D    I think I will put the pots in a polystyrene box to give them added warmth and keep them out of the sun.  Fingers crossed that given the extra warmth they will start to grow stronger.

Thanks for your replies everyone.   :D
