Title: Another visitor
Post by: lorna on April 28, 2006, 23:32:43
Today I saw a thrush walking around under the feeding station. I know nothing unusual but it is the first thrush I have seen in my garden.. Who knows the blue t*its may be the next to visit.

Carol. Yes I keep the feeders full up and make sure they have clean water..I was so pleased to get the couple of green finches but I thought they would go for the niger seed but they just go to the mixed wild bird seed all the time.
BTW is it nIger or nYger. I have seen it spelt both ways but don't suppose the birds mind ;D

I havent seen the greenfinches  eat the Nyger seed.  ( I must spell it that way).  Its only the goldfinches that go for it.  Have you any takers for the Niger seed?  You dont need to keep throwing it away  Lorna,  as long as the seed is dry it will keep for some time.   ;D ;D

Ah! Thanks Carol. The seed is quite dry so won't throw it away again :) No, none of the nyger seed has been eaten..At least I am getting more birds in the garden. The blackbirds are getting very tame.

Lorna, I am so pleased you have a thrush.   ;D ;D   I am sure the other birds will come eventually.  Greenfinches have much bigger beaks than goldfinches and I don't think they could get to the seed even if they wanted too.  Peanuts and sunflower are their favourites so they probably pick them out from your mixed wild bird seed.  The only birds I have seen on my niger feeder so far have been goldfinches and siskins but they are well worth waiting for.   :D

I don't get so many finches now and suspect that they are too busy nesting.  The most I get at any one time is five.  They will be back though and probably in greater numbers.

Fingers crossed now for the bluetits to come.   ;D ;D

Pauline. Ah! another bit of info you have given me. Yes, I have noticed the greenfinches are fond of the peanuts and have seen them diving in to the "open" dish with the sunflower seed..
He he I am even telling the kids about the things I have learnt!! Have even got them standing in the kitchen when I am making their cuppa and gazing out of the kitchen window!!.

Lorna, I am pleased your grandchildren are interested in the birds.  My father taught me about birds and wild flowers when I was a small child but it was a disappointment to me when my own children were not interested in the natural world no matter how much encouragement I gave them.    :(   Perhaps I will have better luck with my grandchildren when they grow up a bit.   :D

i was on the phone talking to my (97 year old) nan today, talking about the veggies and the birdies.  she had to wait until i was 48 until i was interested, and then told me  that my grandad used to plant sacrificial marigolds by the broadies !  she was pleased as punch to know that i'd be doing just that as i had about 5 spare marigold seedlings  looking for a home as i'd not thought about protecting the broadies like that.

back to birds ..... all my thug pigeons seem to be frightening off the little ones atm despite them now having their own tables (the 25k bag of feed arrived in the week so i don't mind it so much putting some out for the bullies).  it may of course be that the littlies are busy on their nests but you'd think they have to eat sometime.

point of note with bag of seed ....... i'm having to sift out the whole peanuts and putting them in the peanut feeder so the babies don't choke.   :o

Well would you believe it. After saying in my previous post that the niger seed had not been touched I walked out in to the kitchen half hour ago and there were two bird feeding like mad on the niger feeder. That feeder is on the "blind" side looking from the kitchen window so I couldn't get a clear view. The parts of the birds I could see did look like greenfinches.. I was quite excited thinking I had more new visitors. Haven't seen the thrush today.

i'm sitting here watching the regular friends, thinking about your new visitors Lorna and wishing i had some new ones, when all of a sudden a really timid wee dunnock made me laugh by stretching from the twig that the feeder is on so he didn't have to hop on the perch.

so even the boring ones are making me laugh.  ;D

Mrs KP I quite agree. When I first started "birds" as my new hobby I didn't like starlings at all. Now I often laugh at the way they squabble with each other, often they chase each other away from the feeder.

i was out there earlier around the corner from the static table, heard lot's of scratching and commotion, poked my head around the corner slowy to find two pigeons "doing things" on the table.  their heads were right up under the roof, so they weren't feeding, just kicking all the seed off the table.  i think i might have interrupted a bit of a pigeon snog !!!   :P
