Title: help ... somethings munching my beans and it ain't me
Post by: mc55 on April 28, 2006, 22:32:11
planted my beautiful broad beans out a couple of weeks ago and covered them with chicken wire.

Two weeks later one of them has nearly disappeared entirely and the rest have huge chunks missing ... suspect that its slugs ?  Leaves kinda look like a caterpillar has been to dinner, but its a bit early for them yet.

What am I doing wrong and what should I be doing to protect them ?

Do the leaves look like this:

If so it is the bean weevil.

There are some commercial sprays out there but I have never used them as the plants usually recover.

A dusting of derris would work I guess if worried.

Hi Jerry, no its more like a slice has been taken off the leaf ... the smallest (and therefore most attractive I guess) has been reduced to more or less a stalk
