Post by: Greenfingers Jo on April 27, 2006, 12:49:51
Bought some plug plants from T&M and have potted them into 5 inch pots inside. They are now romping away and I0 have read to get them to bush out properly you have to pich them out.
Can I use whats piched off to make a cutting?

Thanks
Jo

You can, but since you normally only pinch out the tips, i.e., top pair of leaflets, they'd be a bit small  8)

If you want a really tight shaped plant , pinch at every pair of leaves, every  2 sets gives a nice plant for the garden, remember SOFT tips are far easier than woody stems, give a soak at start cover with propagator cover or polythene, put under bench and you probably won't need to water  again until they're rooted.
Hope this helpsJo.

hi jo,
You will be able to root even the tiniest of cuttings, I have rooted ones in the past that I could barely pick up, when your cutings have rooted, pot up into 2"
pots, then one inch at a time, if you pot on to too big a size too quickly, then the plant will put all it's energy into forming roots rather than foilage, do not allow plants to become potbound or they will flower prematurely as they think their lives are under threat, with the double varieties like 'Blacky', you will have to remember that it will take approx 80 days to come into flower after the last pinch, so don't pinch too many times or you won't have time to see the blooms.......Veggie
