Title: leftover stuff from consruction sites
Post by: tabbycat on April 25, 2006, 21:11:34
I will be so pleased if this becomes a reality.... :)

My OH works for a large construction company that builds supermarkets (all of the big 4) and other large retail units (think swedish here). They always have loads of materials that they just skip, sometimes because they are ripping out perfectly good stuff but it's just not wanted anymore, and sometimes because, ridiculously, it's cheaper to over-order and skip the surplus.

since I've been on this site (and Freecycle) and have been telling him about the allotment ethos of re-use & recycle, he's been doing some thinking. (i think that an entire window-sill full of empty loo-roll tubes also made him take notice!)

He's just put together a proposal to have a safe, set-aside area on each of their sites where they can put all the unwanted materials and that members of the public can then take for their own use.

It needs to be approved by his bosses and they need to work out a way of stopping unscrupulous profiteers taking the lot and reselling, but.... if it does happen, it will be fantastic!

Will keep you all posted.

Sounds like a great idea Tabbycat! My local florist does something similar (on a much smaller scale). She leaves a box outside with empty plant pots and a sign which reads 'free: help yourself!'

Sounds like a brilliant idea Tabbycat!!  ;D

My Hubbie used to work for a very large Swedish furniture company and when they were having refurbs, he used to get me loads of great stuff!  My runner bean frame is made from the uprights of the warehouse racking. bright red, don't half stand out!!!

Will be looking out for your updates on this one  :D
Donna.

What a great idea.

If and when it is approved, will you give us the 'heads up' on locations with the best lottie materials ;D ;D

it's a web community of people, worldwide, who want to reduce waste and landfill so they've set up a site - www.freecycle.org.

You post your unwanted stuff (it can be anything - they draw the line at children though, i've already tried! ;D) and then whoever wants it contacts you and collects it.

You join the web community that's nearest to you - you can be on more than one. all you ned is a Yahoo mail address and they are easy to set up.. try it - you can find some great stuff. You have to offer something before you can take something though.
